City Of God

City of God is based on actual events that occurred in Rio de Janeiro during the 1960s and 1970s, and which formed the factual background for Paulo Lins’ novel of the same name. The storyline is not straightforward. The movie tells the tale of the rise and fall of the fearsome, sociopath gang leader Li’l Zé but also shows a completey different type of person “Rocket” who doesnt get involved in all the violence but still cant escape the slums. The saying “fight you will die , run you will never escape” shows the message that it is there life they cant escape it. I really enjoyed the film and thought it gave a strong message to what is actually going on in certain parts of the World. It is very powerful in a sense that it is all based on a true story as in the film there is such characters as Rocket who are good kids living in a lawless world. The ending of the film to me summed it up well showing how the police are currupt put the kids killing Lil Ze showed the cycle starting all over again and i think the film shows this at several stages . The making of the film really showed views what life is like in the slums and shows it to be unescapable.

Film studies Course Work: Small Scale research project For this research project I am doing star performer, my title is “How has Jim Carrey developed, in terms of his roles, throughout his career but still added his style of comedy?” My focus film is Bruce Almighty (2003) and my two related films are the number 23 (2007) and Ace Ventura pet detective (1994).

Annotated catalogue

Films Item 1 Bruce Almighty (2003) American comedy film, directed by Tom Shadyac and written by Steve Koren, Mark O’Keefe and Steve Oedekerk. This is very useful as it has Jim Carrey playing a melancholy role despite portraying his role in his typical manic style. We see him take on the role of God but still manages to maintain his style of comedy.

Item 2 Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is a 1994 American comedy film directed by Tom Shadyac and starring Jim Carrey. This is useful because it shows Jim Carrey as someone who is meant to find peoples pets that are lost but yet again he portrays his funny humor. It is one of many films I could have chosen.

Item 3 Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is a (2004) black comedy film directed by Brad Silberling. This film was very useful as it shows Jim Carrey playing the role of Count Olaf who is an evil character, he adds in his comedy style still throughout the film, which shows how he can develop into different roles and still portray his humor.

 Internet

Item 4 http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000120/bio.The imdb (The Internet Movie Database) website offers some biographical information; it gave various different Links for Jim Carrey. It gives sufficient information on each of the films he has done entailing his roles and there plots.

Item 5 http://www.articlesbase.com/movies-articles/jim-carrey-jumps-right-back-into-comedies-694836.html This wasn’t a big website but I feel It was useful as it is an interview he has had and he talks about how he has done different roles and is ready to go back to his normal comedy manic self. This quote shows the sort of role changes he has had “the actor, who was first known for his highly animated comedic film roles but has branched out to dramas and thrillers in the past decade, is back to what he does best in the new comedy Yes Man. The role is not unlike his past characters in films like Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty”.

Item 6 http://www.popstarsplus.com/actors_jimcarrey.htm . This website is full of information about Jim Carrey, His life before film and all about how his career started listing through all the films he has been in. I think this is particularly useful for looking at Jim Carrey and how he started.

Item 7 http://www.jimcarreyonline.com/recent/news.php?id=1383 . This website is made by fans for fans. I found this interesting because has a lot of up to date interviews which Jim Carrey has done. One that caught my eye was most recent one where he was interviewed about his new film he is starring in “Disney’s A Christmas Carol“ and he states the different roles he will be playing throughout the film.

Item 8 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Carrey This site was full of information about Jim Carrey was fairly detailed so quite useful. Describes the different roles he has been in and a lot about his Comedy. Books

Item 9 The Joker Is Wild (2000). Knelman, Martin. U.S: the trials and triumphs of Jim Carrey. This was useful as it gave an in site and an overview of his career so far. It gives us his reviews and others on films he had done before such as Ace Ventura , The mask and others which is him playing in his comic style.

MATERIAL NOT SELECTED There is some material I did not list above as I didn’t find it much use. http://www.ringsurf.com/online/1197-jim_carrey.html This website wasn’t very useful it gave a lot of information which I didn’t feel was useful; it was irrelevant to what I am looking at.

Review on Once were warriors

Once were warriors is a film that shows the  domestic violence in urban societies, not just those in New Zealand. I found the film very hard to watch as it shows a great deal of violence that is not nice to witness even if it was a film. It really sets a scene showing how bad these societies actually was , with a man who was very selfish and had drinking and serious anger problems. I think all the acting in the film is very good especially the acting by the wife of jake ( beth ) she is very good and i feel the film protrays the domestic violence very well and it has a very sad tone and lets everybody watching feel what is happening and made me feel as if i wanted to help.

La Haine

La Haine is a french black and white film directed by Mathieu  Kassovitz, released in 1995. It is a story of three friends who are struggling to cope with the harsh realities of life in tough suburban Paris. I enjoyed the film but found it hard to follow. I felt the fim plot was very confusing as the film is all based on one day. It has many different messages given out during the film which makes it interesting. The narrative centres on Vinz who finds a policeman’s revolver after the previous night’s riots and his want to be powerful and big image results in him vowing to shoot a police officer if Abdel finally dies as a result of his beating. I feel the film keeps you entertained throughout as it is full of so much energy there is always something exciting happening , mainly showing youth getting into trouble. The three are very different characters to each other and seems strange that they hang around together but they all end up having to help eachother at a certain point to protect eachother. I didn’t enjoy the ending I feel for me it spoiled it but over all i was very amused by the film and enjoyed it and i think it is very well protrayed
